the obama campaign before the debate was putting out that president obama was watching football. they wanted to give the impression that he wasn't obsessed with the debate. he wasn't going to be overprepared to project an air of copy dense and lower expectations. in this instance they may have made a mistake doing that because the president played down to most those expectations. bill: debate number two, do you think should wipe the floor again? it's a contrary view, but is that an effect? >> i don't think pope he is still president and you will have a media narrative that want the president to recover here that's going to want the president to do better than he did this time. i think the president will have a difficult task. on the one hand he's got to be tougher and challenge mitt romney. on the other, he's still president. he can't seem to be beneath the office of the presidency. bill: thank you. steven hayes in washington. there is so much more to talk about and we shall with martha. martha: moral issues came up also how governor romney tide this to the economic debate. also,

president obama gets the first question at tonight's debate and mitt romney will have the last word in the debate that 50 million americans may be watching. the stage is set for the highest of political drama. joining me now is abby huntsman, host and producer of huff post live. and she helped prep hillary clinton for the debates four years ago. thank you to you both for being here. >> great to be here. >> abby, what's the biggest danger for governor romney tonight? >> reverend, let me start by wishing you a happy birthday tonight. >> you have a file on me, i hear. i hope everything is fine or good. >> i think we'll survive unless you can't hear me but i would say the biggest challenge that mitt romney has is he's in a box. no matter what he says, it's likely he says the complete opposite in his past. look, people are wanting to see the real mitt romney. they want to know who he really is. i think his biggest challenge is not being himself. >> now, your dad, jon huntsman, was a candidate against him and debated against him. did you have a problem, which romney is going to show snup. >>

even the most ardent democrat would admit that president obama isn't the best debater. but according to beth myers . . . >> jennifer: and then president obama's top political advisor is just as glowing about mitt romney . . . they are so funny, my opponent he is abe lincoln and daniel webster all rolled into one. isn't that kind of weird hearing the campaign say such nice things about their opponents? believe me it's not going to last and it's all part of managing expectations before the debate. for more i'm joined by one of the country's foremost experts on the subject. samuel popkin who is a professor of political science at the university of san diego. he has worked on campaigns going back to the 1970s, and he is also the author of "the candidate." welcome back inside "the war room," profez or. >> it's a pleasure to be back with you governor. >> jennifer: all right. do you think this has been taken to a new level this year? >> i think it has been taken to a new level every year and gets more mindless meaningless and irrelevant every year. >> jennifer: i love that. be

i don't think it was the best debate performance for president obama. i agree with you we'll have to see how the specifics on the substantive issues settle in as people reflect on them. but the first visceral reaction i had was that romney did himself some good in this debate. i'm strongly supporting president obama, and i think he is going to win, but i don't think this was his best night. >> cenk: governor grandholm? [ laughter ] >> jennifer: i'm sad to say that i agree, and i really really am sad to say that i agree, because i so wanted to be wrong about thinking that romney was going to come out swinging. i think the president -- he was right on facts, but there were opportunities that were missed. so the not saying -- not hitting back on the $716 billion was a missed opportunity. i know the fact checkers -- >> al gore: and romney said it five times. >> cenk: or six times. >> jennifer: and there was stuff about cayman islands that would have been mentioned. all of that. but if you look at what is happening on line the fact checkers -- there is style

a whopping 67% think mitt romney won the debate. 25% for president obama. there's a long way to go in this debate and the divide between left and right is growing. th brings me to tonight's battleground america. the debate you have been waiting for. jennifer granholm versus newt gingrich. she's the former governor of michigan. he's of course, the former presidential candidate and speaker of the house. just as in last night's debate, we are running a clock at the bottom of your screen to keep track of speaking time for our debaters although frankly, i want a real debate. if you two decide to go at each other, chew each other to pieces, that's fine with me. we'll forget all about the clock. if i want to interrupt and pick you up on any inconsistencies in your arguments, i will be piling in with impunity also ignoring the clock. so the clock really is just a visual tool to amuse viewers at home. welcome to you both. let me start with you, jennifer granholm. the opening question is what the hell was wrong with barack obama last night? >> well, i'm going to quot
